Anxiety & Fear
Draft, under review
If your mind won't settle, or fear has a grip on you, Scripture doesn't scold you. It speaks to you, again and again.
① Anchor passages
- Isa 41:10: God's presence and help, spoken to a frightened people.
- Matt 6:25–34: Jesus reasons with anxious listeners about the Father's care.
- Phil 4:6–7: Anxieties turned into prayer, and peace that guards the heart.
- 1 Pet 5:6–7: Casting cares on the One who cares.
- Ps 56:3–4: Trust chosen in the moment of fear.
② The person's story: the disciples in the storm
- Mark 4:35–38: It was Jesus' idea to cross the lake (Mark 4:35). Experienced fishermen panic in a storm while He sleeps, and they ask whether He cares.
- Mark 4:39: He rebukes the wind and the sea, and there is calm.
- Mark 4:40: He asks about their fear and their faith. It is a question, not a rejection.
- Mark 4:41: Their fear shifts from the storm to awe at who He is.
Connective note: The storm did not mean Jesus had stopped caring. He was in the boat. The passage moves from fear of the circumstance to the fear of the Lord (compare Ps 107:23–30), and the second fear is the cure for the first.
③ Psalm / prayer to pray
- Ps 46: God our refuge while the earth gives way.
- Ps 27: Confidence in the Lord as light and stronghold. Pray the whole psalm, including its honest middle (Ps 27:7–12) and its closing wait (Ps 27:13–14).

Stage notes
Skeptic. Isn't faith just a way to calm fear? Scripture doesn't pretend fear goes away when you believe. Its heroes are openly afraid (Ps 55:4–5; Mark 14:33–34). Its comfort rests on claims about history, a God who acted and a Christ who rose (1 Cor 15:3–8, 17-19), not on positive thinking. Test the claim, not the feeling (Luke 1:1–4).
Brand-new. God doesn't ask you to fake calm. He invites you to bring each worry to Him in prayer, specifically and with thanks (Phil 4:6–7), because He cares for you (1 Pet 5:7). Start small: pray Ps 56:3 when fear rises, and take one day at a time (Matt 6:34).
Developing. Jesus connects anxiety to what we treasure (Matt 6:19–24, 33). Paul gives a practice: pray, give thanks and redirect the mind (Phil 4:6–9). Fear of the Lord reorders lesser fears (Isa 8:12–13; Matt 10:28–31). Peace is a person's presence (John 14:27), not the absence of storms (John 16:33).
Experienced. Tension texts: Phil 4:6 calls us not to be anxious about anything but to pray about everything, yet Paul admits to daily anxious concern for the churches (2 Cor 11:28) and sends Epaphroditus so that he may be less anxious (Phil 2:28). Not all concern is sin; the question is where it goes. Jesus Himself was in anguish in Gethsemane (Luke 22:44) and brought it to the Father. Godly concern is carried to God. Sinful worry is carried without Him.
Scholar. See the word studies below. Also notice that the same Greek verb is used for proper care (1 Cor 12:25; Phil 2:20) and for forbidden anxiety (Matt 6:25; Phil 4:6). Context, not the word itself, decides which is meant.
Word studies: verified (STEPBible). Strong's numbers checked against TBESH/TBESG, and occurrence in each cited verse checked against TAHOT/TAGNT (the Psalms were checked in the raw TAHOT, see the bundle).
- merimnao (Greek, G3309): to be anxious, divided in care (Matt 6:25–34; Phil 4:6).
- yare' (Hebrew, H3372): to fear, revere (Isa 41:10; Ps 56:3). Prov 9:10 uses the related noun yir'ah (H3374), the fear of the Lord.
- phobos (Greek, G5401): fear, terror, reverence (1 John 4:18; Acts 9:31).

Notes for Theo: Is the medical-care note worded rightly? Should seed 3 (Is anxiety a sin?) be added to the tree?
