Saved by Grace Through Faith
Draft, under review
You don't earn God's acceptance. Scripture says it is a gift, received by trusting Christ, and it changes everything after.
① Anchor passages
- Eph 2:1–10: Dead in sin, made alive with Christ, saved by grace through faith, created for good works.
- Rom 3:21–26: Righteousness from God through faith in Jesus Christ, for all who believe.
- Rom 5:1–11: Peace with God, and Christ dying for us while we were still sinners.
- Titus 3:4–7: Saved not by our righteous works but by His mercy.
- John 3:16–18: God's love, the gift of the Son, and believing in Him.
② The person's story: the tax collector and the thief
- Luke 18:9–14: A Pharisee lists his record. A tax collector stands far off and asks only for mercy, and he is the one who goes home justified.
- Luke 23:39–43: A dying criminal with no time to do good works asks Jesus to remember him, and Jesus promises him paradise today.
Connective note: Neither man brought anything but need. Both were received. Grace is not a reward for the best people. It is God's gift to the people who know they need it (Luke 5:31–32; Rom 4:4–5).
③ Psalm / prayer to pray
- Ps 32:1–5: The blessing of the one whose sin is forgiven (Paul cites it in Rom 4:6–8).
- Ps 51:1–12: A plea for mercy and a clean heart.

Stage notes
Skeptic. Isn't "just believe" too easy, or unfair? Scripture's claim is that it was not easy at all, because it cost God His Son (Rom 8:32; 2 Cor 5:21). It is fair because sin's penalty was really paid, so God is both just and the one who justifies (Rom 3:26). Grace also levels everyone: no one can boast, whether religious or not (Eph 2:9; Rom 3:22–23).
Brand-new. You can't earn salvation and you don't have to (Eph 2:8–9; Titus 3:5). Christ died for your sins and rose again (1 Cor 15:3–4). Turn to Him and trust Him (Mark 1:15; Acts 3:19; Rom 10:9–13). Whoever comes to Him, He will not cast out (John 6:37). Assurance rests on His promise, not on how you feel today (1 John 5:11–13).
Developing. Grace saves, and grace trains (Titus 2:11–14). Good works are the fruit of salvation, not its root (Eph 2:10). Faith that is real shows itself in action (Jas 2:17–18; Gal 5:6). Baptism is the commanded response of faith (Matt 28:19; Acts 2:38). Believers differ on how baptism relates to salvation, and this page keeps grace through faith central without settling that secondary question (per theo-review-1 §8).
Experienced. Tension texts: Paul says a person is justified by faith apart from works of the law (Rom 3:28). James says a person is justified by works and not by faith alone (Jas 2:24). Both cite Abraham (Rom 4:1–5; Jas 2:21–23). A common reading: Paul addresses how a sinner is declared right before God, while James addresses what kind of faith is real and how it is shown. ⚠ Theo: confirm this. Also consider: God's sovereign choosing (Eph 1:4–5; Rom 9) and the free offer to all (Rev 22:17; 1 Tim 2:4). Present these as views Christians hold charitably, not as a settled position.
Scholar. In Rom 3:24–25 three images converge: the law court (dikaioo, to justify), the marketplace (redemption), and the temple (hilasterion, the means or place of atonement, used of the mercy seat in Heb 9:5; cf. Lev 16:14–15). In Eph 2:8, the gift is grammatically debated: does it refer to faith or to the whole of salvation? Present both readings. Either way, the passage makes salvation entirely God's gift. ⚠ Theo. Poiema (Eph 2:10) names believers as God's workmanship.
