Ezekiel 1

¹⁶As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him.

⁵⁶“Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”

¹¹Then I saw heaven standing open, and there before me was a white horse. And its rider is called Faithful and True. With righteousness He judges and wages war.

²⁴And the Spirit lifted me up and carried me back to Chaldea, to the exiles in the vision given by the Spirit of God. After the vision had gone up from me,

¹After this I looked and saw a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had previously heard speak to me like a trumpet was saying, “Come up here, and I will show you what must happen after these things.”

¹⁵Then the cherubim rose upward. These were the living creatures I had seen by the River Kebar.

¹²Jehoiachin king of Judah, his mother, his servants, his commanders, and his officials all surrendered to the king of Babylon. So in the eighth year of his reign, the king of Babylon took him captive.

¹³As the Lord had declared, Nebuchadnezzar also carried off all the treasures from the house of the Lord and the royal palace, and he cut into pieces all the gold articles that Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the Lord.

¹In the sixth year, on the fifth day of the sixth month, I was sitting in my house, and the elders of Judah were sitting before me; and there the hand of the Lord God fell upon me.

¹In the seventh year, on the tenth day of the fifth month, some of the elders of Israel came to inquire of the Lord, and they sat down before me.

¹In the twenty-fifth year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth day of the month—in the fourteenth year after Jerusalem had been struck down—on that very day the hand of the Lord was upon me, and He took me there.

¹⁷In the twenty-seventh year, on the first day of the first month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

¹In the eleventh year, on the first day of the third month, the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

²²And there the hand of the Lord was upon me, and He said to me, “Get up, go out to the plain, and there I will speak with you.”

¹⁴So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the Lord upon me.

¹⁵But now, bring me a harpist.” And while the harpist played, the hand of the Lord came upon Elisha

⁴⁶And the hand of the Lord came upon Elijah, and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.

¹In the sixth year, on the fifth day of the sixth month, I was sitting in my house, and the elders of Judah were sitting before me; and there the hand of the Lord God fell upon me.

¹The hand of the Lord was upon me, and He brought me out by His Spirit and set me down in the middle of the valley, and it was full of bones.

²⁷From what seemed to be His waist up, I saw a gleam like amber, with what looked like fire within it all around. And from what seemed to be His waist down, I saw what looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded Him.

²Then I looked and saw a figure like that of a man. From His waist down His appearance was like fire, and from His waist up He was as bright as the gleam of amber.

¹⁹Behold, the storm of the Lord has gone out with fury, a whirlwind swirling down upon the heads of the wicked.

¹³Again the word of the Lord came to me, asking, “What do you see?” “I see a boiling pot,” I replied, “and it is tilting toward us from the north.”

¹⁴Then the Lord said to me, “Disaster from the north will be poured out on all who live in the land.

¹This is the burden against the Desert by the Sea: Like whirlwinds sweeping through the Negev, an invader comes from the desert, from a land of terror.

¹⁶On the third day, when morning came, there was thunder and lightning. A thick cloud was upon the mountain, and a very loud blast of the ram’s horn went out, so that all the people in the camp trembled.

¹⁷Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.

⁶And before the throne was something like a sea of glass, as clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, covered with eyes in front and back.

⁷The first living creature was like a lion, the second like a calf, the third had a face like a man, and the fourth was like an eagle in flight.

⁶And I heard what sounded like a voice from among the four living creatures, saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not harm the oil and wine.”

²⁶Above the expanse over their heads was the likeness of a throne with the appearance of sapphire, and on the throne high above was a figure like that of a man.

¹⁴Each of the cherubim had four faces: the first face was that of a cherub, the second that of a man, the third that of a lion, and the fourth that of an eagle.

²¹Each had four faces and four wings, with what looked like human hands under their wings.

²²Their faces looked like the faces I had seen by the River Kebar. Each creature went straight ahead.

⁸Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. All four living creatures had faces and wings,

⁹and their wings were touching one another. They did not turn as they moved; each one went straight ahead.

²Above Him stood seraphim, each having six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

²⁰And the cherubim are to have wings that spread upward, overshadowing the mercy seat. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the mercy seat.

¹⁵When I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces.

¹⁵His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and His voice was like the roar of many waters.

⁶His body was like beryl, his face like the brilliance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of polished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude.

¹³In the midst of the living creatures was the appearance of glowing coals of fire, or of torches. Fire moved back and forth between the living creatures; it was bright, and lightning flashed out of it.

⁴He makes the winds His messengers, flames of fire His servants.

⁴⁷You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between animals that may be eaten and those that may not.’”

³You may eat any animal that has a split hoof completely divided and that chews the cud.

²¹Each had four faces and four wings, with what looked like human hands under their wings.

¹⁸Then the glory of the Lord moved away from the threshold of the temple and stood above the cherubim.

¹¹When they moved, they would go in any of the four directions, without turning as they moved. For wherever the head faced, the cherubim would go in that direction, without turning as they moved.

³He stretched out what looked like a hand and took me by the hair of my head. Then the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and carried me in visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court, where the idol that provokes jealousy was seated.

²And the Lord said to the man clothed in linen, “Go inside the wheelwork beneath the cherubim. Fill your hands with burning coals from among the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And as I watched, he went in.

⁷Then one of the cherubim reached out his hand and took some of the fire that was among them. And he put it into the hands of the man clothed in linen, who received it and went out.

⁸(The cherubim appeared to have the form of human hands under their wings.)

¹¹Such were their faces. Their wings were spread upward; each had two wings touching the wings of the creature on either side, and two wings covering its body.

⁶²Then Jesus declared, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and then looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

¹¹The total wingspan of the cherubim was twenty cubits. One wing of the first cherub was five cubits long and touched the wall of the temple, and its other wing was five cubits long and touched the wing of the other cherub.

¹²The wing of the second cherub also measured five cubits and touched the wall of the temple, while its other wing measured five cubits and touched the wing of the first cherub.

¹⁰I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree together, so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be united in mind and conviction.

⁵¹As the day of His ascension approached, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

¹⁴Each of the cherubim had four faces: the first face was that of a cherub, the second that of a man, the third that of a lion, and the fourth that of an eagle.

⁷The first living creature was like a lion, the second like a calf, the third had a face like a man, and the fourth was like an eagle in flight.

⁹For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.” Is it about oxen that God is concerned?

¹⁰Isn’t He actually speaking on our behalf? Indeed, this was written for us, because when the plowman plows and the thresher threshes, they should also expect to share in the harvest.

¹⁰In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels over one sinner who repents.”

⁴⁹The Lord will bring a nation from afar, from the ends of the earth, to swoop down upon you like an eagle—a nation whose language you will not understand,

²⁵On the north side, the divisions of Dan are to camp under their standard: The leader of the Danites is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai,

²Above Him stood seraphim, each having six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

²³And under the expanse, their wings stretched out toward one another. Each one also had two wings covering its body.

¹⁶When the cherubim moved, the wheels moved beside them, and even when they spread their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels did not veer away from their side.

¹⁹As I watched, the cherubim lifted their wings and rose up from the ground, with the wheels beside them as they went. And they stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the house of the Lord, with the glory of the God of Israel above them.

⁹and their wings were touching one another. They did not turn as they moved; each one went straight ahead.

²⁰Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise alongside them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

²¹When the creatures moved, the wheels moved; when the creatures stood still, the wheels stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose alongside them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

²²Their faces looked like the faces I had seen by the River Kebar. Each creature went straight ahead.

¹⁴Are not the angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

¹⁷As they moved, they went in any of the four directions, without pivoting as they moved.

⁴He makes the winds His messengers, flames of fire His servants.

⁵From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder. Before the throne burned seven torches of fire. These are the seven spirits of God.

¹Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head. His face was like the sun, and his legs were like pillars of fire.

⁵I lifted up my eyes, and behold, there was a certain man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist.

⁶His body was like beryl, his face like the brilliance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of polished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude.

³His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.

¹⁷When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, behold, a smoking firepot and a flaming torch appeared and passed between the halves of the carcasses.

¹⁰For who has despised the day of small things? But these seven eyes of the Lord, which scan the whole earth, will rejoice when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.”

²⁷For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

²¹while I was still praying, Gabriel, the man I had seen in the earlier vision, came to me in swift flight about the time of the evening sacrifice.

²⁷And He will send out the angels to gather His elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

²⁴For just as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other, so will be the Son of Man in His day.

¹⁵He sends forth His command to the earth; His word runs swiftly.

⁹As I continued to watch, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took His seat. His clothing was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze.

⁹Then I looked and saw four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub. And the wheels gleamed like a beryl stone.

¹⁹So as the living creatures moved, the wheels moved beside them, and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose.

²⁰Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise alongside them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

⁷The first living creature was like a lion, the second like a calf, the third had a face like a man, and the fourth was like an eagle in flight.

⁶but each had four faces and four wings.

¹³I heard the wheels being called “the whirling wheels.”

¹⁴Each of the cherubim had four faces: the first face was that of a cherub, the second that of a man, the third that of a lion, and the fourth that of an eagle.

⁶His body was like beryl, his face like the brilliance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of polished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude.

⁹Then I looked and saw four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub. And the wheels gleamed like a beryl stone.

¹⁰As for their appearance, all four had the same form, like a wheel within a wheel.

⁵Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders You have done, and the plans You have for us—none can compare to You—if I proclaim and declare them, they are more than I can count.

⁶Your righteousness is like the highest mountains; Your judgments are like the deepest sea. O Lord, You preserve man and beast.

¹³and the fourth row had a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper. These stones were mounted in gold filigree settings.

¹⁰His purpose was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms,

⁹and their wings were touching one another. They did not turn as they moved; each one went straight ahead.

¹²Each creature went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they moved.

¹And I looked and saw above the expanse, above the heads of the cherubim, the likeness of a throne of sapphire.

²And the Lord said to the man clothed in linen, “Go inside the wheelwork beneath the cherubim. Fill your hands with burning coals from among the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And as I watched, he went in.

¹¹so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it.

¹²Their entire bodies, including their backs, hands, and wings, were full of eyes all around, as were their four wheels.

⁶And before the throne was something like a sea of glass, as clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, covered with eyes in front and back.

⁸And each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around and within. Day and night they never stop saying: “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

²Clouds and darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are His throne’s foundation.

³Fire goes before Him and consumes His foes on every side.

¹⁶The waters saw You, O God; the waters saw You and swirled; even the depths were shaken.

¹⁷The clouds poured down water; the skies resounded with thunder; Your arrows flashed back and forth.

²²Out of the north He comes in golden splendor; awesome majesty surrounds Him.

²³The Almighty is beyond our reach; He is exalted in power! In His justice and great righteousness He does not oppress.

¹⁶When the cherubim moved, the wheels moved beside them, and even when they spread their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels did not veer away from their side.

¹⁹As I watched, the cherubim lifted their wings and rose up from the ground, with the wheels beside them as they went. And they stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the house of the Lord, with the glory of the God of Israel above them.

²⁰Bless the Lord, all His angels mighty in strength who carry out His word, who hearken to the voice of His command.

¹²Each creature went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they moved.

¹⁷When the cherubim stood still, the wheels also stood still, and when they ascended, the wheels ascended with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

³²The spirits of prophets are subject to prophets.

¹And again I lifted up my eyes and saw four chariots coming out from between two mountains—mountains of bronze.

²The first chariot had red horses, the second black horses,

¹⁷When the cherubim stood still, the wheels also stood still, and when they ascended, the wheels ascended with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

¹⁹So as the living creatures moved, the wheels moved beside them, and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose.

²⁰Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise alongside them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

²For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death.

¹And I looked and saw above the expanse, above the heads of the cherubim, the likeness of a throne of sapphire.

²⁶Above the expanse over their heads was the likeness of a throne with the appearance of sapphire, and on the throne high above was a figure like that of a man.

⁶And before the throne was something like a sea of glass, as clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, covered with eyes in front and back.

²²Out of the north He comes in golden splendor; awesome majesty surrounds Him.

¹⁰and they saw the God of Israel. Under His feet was a work like a pavement made of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself.

³The One seated there looked like jasper and carnelian, and a rainbow that gleamed like an emerald encircled the throne.

⁷In the council of the holy ones, God is greatly feared, and awesome above all who surround Him.

²⁴When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings like the roar of many waters, like the voice of the Almighty, like the tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings.

¹⁸If God puts no trust in His servants, and He charges His angels with error,

¹¹Such were their faces. Their wings were spread upward; each had two wings touching the wings of the creature on either side, and two wings covering its body.

¹²Each creature went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they moved.

¹⁰So you also, when you have done everything commanded of you, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”

²and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of many waters, and the earth shone with His glory.

⁶His body was like beryl, his face like the brilliance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of polished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude.

¹⁵His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and His voice was like the roar of many waters.

³The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders; the Lord is heard over many waters.

⁴The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic.

⁶And I heard a sound like the roar of a great multitude, like the rushing of many waters, and like a mighty rumbling of thunder, crying out: “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.

³³to Him who rides upon the highest heavens of old; behold, His mighty voice resounds.

²²Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was the likeness of an awesome expanse, gleaming like crystal.

¹And I looked and saw above the expanse, above the heads of the cherubim, the likeness of a throne of sapphire.

¹⁰and they saw the God of Israel. Under His feet was a work like a pavement made of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself.

¹³and among the lampstands was One like the Son of Man, dressed in a long robe, with a golden sash around His chest.

¹⁸Again the one with the likeness of a man touched me and strengthened me.

²²Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was the likeness of an awesome expanse, gleaming like crystal.

¹¹“O afflicted city, lashed by storms, without solace, surely I will set your stones in antimony and lay your foundations with sapphires.

⁴I looked and saw a whirlwind coming from the north, a great cloud with fire flashing back and forth and brilliant light all around it. In the center of the fire was a gleam like amber,

²Then I looked and saw a figure like that of a man. From His waist down His appearance was like fire, and from His waist up He was as bright as the gleam of amber.

²⁹“For our God is a consuming fire.”

²Clouds and darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are His throne’s foundation.

³Our God approaches and will not be silent! Consuming fire precedes Him, and a tempest rages around Him.

²⁴For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

¹Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven, wrapped in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head. His face was like the sun, and his legs were like pillars of fire.

³The One seated there looked like jasper and carnelian, and a rainbow that gleamed like an emerald encircled the throne.

³Then Abram fell facedown, and God said to him,

²³So I got up and went out to the plain, and behold, the glory of the Lord was present there, like the glory I had seen by the River Kebar, and I fell facedown.

¹⁶and the glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered it, and on the seventh day the Lord called to Moses from within the cloud.

⁴He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?”
